Juliana Marins, the 26-year-old woman who became trapped inside an active volcano on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, has tragically passed away before she could be rescued. Her death marks the end of a harrowing ordeal that garnered worldwide attention as six rescue teams and two helicopters were deployed in a desperate bid to save her.
Juliana, a publicist and pole dancer from Brazil, had been hiking with a guide when the tragedy occurred on June 21. She had asked the group to stop for a break, but they continued without her. When the guide returned to check on her, he found that she had fallen off a cliff, over 500 meters deep inside the crater of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano that last erupted in 2016. Juliana’s family believes she became disoriented after being left behind.
For the next several days, rescue teams worked tirelessly to locate her and bring her to safety. Rescuers reported hearing cries for help from the crater, suggesting that Juliana might still be alive. Tragically, after days of searching, her family confirmed that she had passed away.

A social media post from her family reads: “Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was. With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection, and support that we have received.”
Despite the efforts of the rescue teams, which included the use of drones to monitor her location and attempts to reach her through difficult terrain, the operation was ultimately abandoned due to treacherous weather conditions. Gunung Rinjani National Park officials had stated that two large overhangs obstructed the path, making it impossible to safely install the necessary anchor points to continue the climb to Juliana’s location.
Juliana’s family expressed deep gratitude for the global support they received during this difficult time, even as they mourn the loss of their loved one. Her tragic fate serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise during outdoor adventures and the critical importance of safety measures when exploring challenging terrains.
