When Lilia Toscano spotted a taped-up tote left outside her Detroit, Michigan home, she immediately felt something was wrong. The odd placement of the tote prompted her to investigate further. As she opened it, her heart sank — inside was a shivering, terrified dog, huddled in fear.
A Terrified Pup in Need
Lilia quickly called her neighbor for help, and together they brought the dog, later named Kendrick, inside. The poor animal refused to move and seemed paralyzed by fear. It wasn’t immediately clear if Kendrick had been injured or if he was simply overwhelmed by the traumatic situation he had endured.
Without wasting time, they contacted P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue, who quickly responded. One of the rescue members took Kendrick to the vet for an evaluation. X-rays confirmed that the dog was not physically injured, though his emotional trauma was evident. Kendrick was terrified and unsure of who he could trust.

A Journey Toward Healing
Lauren Boesen, a P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue board member, volunteered to foster Kendrick. When she met him at the vet, he was hiding and clearly apprehensive. In an effort to comfort him, Boesen sat on the floor and spoke softly to the frightened dog. Slowly but surely, Kendrick started to relax. A small wag of his tail indicated that he was beginning to feel safe. Boesen was able to put a collar and leash on him, and Kendrick jumped into the car, enjoying the sights as he looked out the window.

Adjusting to a New Life
Once Boesen brought Kendrick home, it became clear that he had never experienced the joys of being a loved pet. He didn’t know how to play with toys, give kisses, or even enjoy being petted. But Boesen was patient. She allowed Kendrick the time and space he needed to adjust to his new, safer surroundings.
Over time, Kendrick began to open up. He learned to love cuddles and affection. “Now, he absolutely loves being picked up and running around in the yard,” Boesen shared. “He also loves running through the snow.”

A Bright Future Ahead
Though Kendrick still has some trust to build, he’s well on his way to becoming a happy, well-adjusted dog. Boesen will continue to foster him until the right forever family comes along. The transformation Kendrick has undergone in such a short time is a testament to the love, patience, and care he’s receiving.
Kendrick’s story is a reminder of the resilience animals have, even after suffering unimaginable neglect. With the right support, they can heal and discover the joy of a loving home.
