Trump Threatens to Withhold Funding From New York City if Zohran Mamdani Wins Mayoral Race

A Shocking Presidential Warning

In a stunning political twist, President Donald Trump has openly threatened to cut off federal funding to New York City if voters elect Zohran Mamdani as their next mayor. With just over a month left before the November 4 election, Trump’s comments have left many Americans — and New Yorkers in particular — gobsmacked.

The warning came shortly after current mayor Eric Adams dropped out of the race, leaving Mamdani — a 33-year-old Democratic socialist assemblyman — in the lead against independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani’s Platform

If elected, Mamdani has promised sweeping reforms aimed at reshaping New York City’s social and economic structure. His key proposals include:

  • Free bus service across the city
  • Universal childcare for children from six weeks to five years old
  • Rent freezes to protect tenants from sudden hikes
  • Stricter accountability for negligent landlords
  • Tripling the production of union-built, rent-stabilized housing

Supporters argue his agenda would make the city more livable for working-class families. Critics, however — including The New York Times — have dismissed his plans as “unrealistic” given the city’s $115 billion budget and its vast municipal workforce of over 300,000 employees.

Trump’s Threat

Trump, who has long used New York City politics as a cultural battleground, went even further than Cuomo’s criticisms. Speaking to the press, he suggested Mamdani could face deportation, calling him a “communist” and alleging — without evidence — that he might be in the country illegally.

On Truth Social, Trump doubled down with a fiery post:

“Self-proclaimed New York City Communist, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party. He needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his FAKE Communist promises. He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him?”

He added that socialist ideology “has failed for thousands of years” and predicted it would fail again under Mamdani’s leadership.

Political Reactions

Trump’s remarks quickly ignited backlash across the political spectrum. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders criticized the president on Twitter/X, writing:

“Trump wants to withhold money from New York City if Zohran Mamdani wins. Really? Because nothing says ‘law and order’ like the President extorting his own city if they don’t vote how he wants.”

Mamdani’s supporters view Trump’s threats as blatant political interference designed to intimidate voters. Others argue it could backfire, energizing progressives who see Trump’s comments as undemocratic strong-arming.

A Historic Election Ahead

If Mamdani prevails, he would become the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s history — a milestone moment in American politics. His rise reflects the growing influence of younger, more progressive Democrats in urban centers, despite fierce opposition from establishment figures and conservatives alike.

With just five weeks left before the polls open, New York City finds itself at the center of a political storm — one that now pits a bold local candidate against the sitting president of the United States.

Whether Trump’s threats sway voters or galvanize Mamdani’s base remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: all eyes will be on New York come November 4.
