Donald Trump has sparked outrage on social media following comments made about the death of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Kirk, a staunch Trump supporter and founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically killed while addressing a crowd at Utah Valley University on September 10, during his “American Comeback Tour.”
In a Fox News interview with Martha MacCallum, Trump made a controversial remark when discussing Kirk’s beliefs, particularly on the topic of hate speech. After MacCallum noted that Kirk had said there was “no such thing as hate speech,” Trump interrupted, saying: “Yeah, he might not be saying that now.”
This seemingly flippant response to Kirk’s death has been widely condemned on social media, with many pointing out the lack of empathy and the insensitivity of the comment. Some critics even argued that Trump’s remarks were more offensive than the controversial monologue that led to the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s show.
One user wrote, “Lmao proof that they don’t even care about the dude or his ideas, they just found a catalyst to enact their fascist agenda and move towards authoritarianism.” Another sarcastically commented, “Guy who mourned Kirk by playing golf and waxing about his White House ballroom has strong ideas about what Kirk would think if he was alive.”
Trump’s comments were further criticized for seemingly exploiting Kirk’s death for political gains, with some calling it more disgusting than simply failing to mourn him properly.
Additionally, Trump recalled his last conversation with Kirk, describing how the activist had called him about a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix, making light of the situation with a chuckle. Trump stated, “He was great. He was a great guy and he didn’t deserve this.”
