Zoos typically have clear warnings around animal enclosures, urging visitors to stay safe and not get too close. But when a life was on the line, one brave truck driver ignored the rules and acted swiftly to rescue a chimpanzee in distress.
This incredible act of bravery took place at the Detroit Zoo, where Rick Swope, accompanied by his wife and three children, was visiting the animals. While enjoying their time, they witnessed a violent fight between two male chimpanzees, which led to a life-threatening situation for one of them.
A Drowning Chimp and a Life-Changing Decision
As the fight broke out between the chimps, Jo-Jo, the more passive chimp, tried to avoid the altercation but unfortunately fell into the deep moat surrounding the enclosure. Struggling and unable to get out, Jo-Jo started to drown, causing panic among the onlookers.

Despite the danger, Rick Swope didn’t hesitate. Without thinking twice, he jumped into the water to save the drowning chimp. The crowd watched in shock and awe as Swope waded through the murky water, fighting to reach Jo-Jo.
“It was the most pitiful thing I ever saw,” Swope recalled after the rescue. “This chimp had his hands up and his head was sticking out of the water. He was looking at the crowd. It was like he wanted someone to rescue him.”
A Relentless Rescue Effort
While zoo staff urgently told him to get out, Rick’s determination never wavered. The water was so dirty that visibility was almost impossible, but Swope wasn’t giving up. He swam around the bottom of the moat until he finally found Jo-Jo, weak but still alive. The brave truck driver then carefully helped the chimp over a cable that was supposed to prevent them from slipping into the moat.
“He was pretty lifeless, but you could see he was still alive. He was looking at me. I think he knew what was going on,” Swope said.

The moment Jo-Jo looked into his savior’s eyes, it was as if the chimp was silently thanking him for the rescue. “Well, you see, I happened to look into his eyes, and it was like looking into the eyes of a man, and the message was, ‘Won’t anybody help me?’”

According to Jane Goodall, a prominent figure at the zoo, Jo-Jo’s life had been anything but easy. He was brought to the zoo as a young chimp after his mother was tragically killed by poachers. Goodall said, “If you see that look with your eyes, and you feel it in your heart, you have to jump in and try to help.”
