The Iconic Photo
Arthur Edwards, a royal photographer who would later document many significant events in the British royal family’s history, tracked down the nursery where Diana worked. After locating her workplace, he convinced her to pose for a series of photographs in a nearby park. During the shoot, something remarkable happened.
As Edwards describes it, the sunlight suddenly broke through, revealing Diana’s silhouette in a way that made for a perfect shot. “Everybody doesn’t believe this, but it is the gospel truth — halfway through, the sun came out and revealed those beautiful legs,” Edwards recalled. The photo was an instant success, capturing a young Diana in a flattering and graceful light.
However, the image that would go on to become iconic was not without controversy. After it was published in several newspapers, Diana was in shock, worried that it revealed too much. She expressed her discomfort, telling Prince Charles, “I don’t want to be known as the girlfriend who had no petticoat.”
