Teen Who Worked at Burger King After Graduation Inspires $230,000 in Donations for College Dreams

Mykale Baker’s story is one of quiet dedication, humility, and determination, proving that real strength often goes unnoticed. On May 21, 2025, after graduating from Mills Creek High School in Georgia, Baker did not head to parties or celebrations like many of his peers. Instead, he chose to go straight back to his job at Burger King, still wearing his graduation medals and stole, to help his team manage the late-night rush.

This simple, selfless act of service would soon touch the hearts of millions, sparking a wave of generosity that changed his life forever.

A Humble Act That Moved a Stranger

After receiving his diploma, Baker took a moment to celebrate with his mother and grandmother at the Burger King where he had worked for over a year. He noticed the restaurant was busy, and without hesitation, he stepped behind the counter to help his team.

Maria Mendoza, a mother who was at the restaurant after her daughter’s graduation, witnessed the act of quiet determination. She was struck by Baker’s kindness, his joy despite a long day, and his unwavering dedication to his job. Inspired by his work ethic, Mendoza filmed a short clip of him in action, which she posted on TikTok.

Her caption read, “You can see he is so proud to carry his medals,” highlighting the humility of a teenager who, instead of seeking attention, was working hard for his future. The video quickly went viral, with over 4.5 million views, and viewers were deeply moved by Baker’s story.

A GoFundMe to Support His College Dreams

Mendoza, feeling compelled to do more than just share the story, created a GoFundMe to help Baker with his college aspirations. Her campaign started with a modest goal of $60,000, but as the video gained traction, donations poured in from around the world. By the time the campaign had gained attention, it raised more than $230,000—far surpassing its original goal.

On the GoFundMe page, Mendoza wrote, “While many graduates spent the night celebrating with friends and family, one young man quietly showed the world what determination looks like.” She highlighted that Baker had no idea his story had gone viral or that people were rallying behind him, but the public’s response to his humility was overwhelming.

A Tearful Surprise

A week later, on May 26, Mendoza returned to the Burger King to surprise Baker with the funds raised for his future. The amount was still over $6,000 at the time, which left him tearfully grateful. In a heartfelt moment, Baker admitted that, due to financial constraints, he had been considering taking a gap year, unsure of how to afford college. But now, with the donations pouring in, he saw a path forward.

“I never thought this would happen to me,” he said, fighting back tears. “Thank you so much. Now, I might actually go straight to technical college and get my mechanical (sic).”

Further Support

The kindness didn’t end there. Burger King’s foundation also stepped in, offering Baker a $10,000 scholarship. This generous gesture added to the support that had already helped turn his uncertain future into a bright one filled with potential.

Baker’s story is a reminder that sometimes, the loudest or most flashy pursuits for fame aren’t what lead to success. Mykale Baker found his strength in humility, dedication, and purpose, and in return, the world stepped forward to offer him the opportunities he deserved.
