Susan Lucci Shares Health Update After Two Grueling Surgeries

Susan Lucci, famously known for her iconic role as Erica Kane on All My Children, has been a beloved figure in the world of daytime television. Her career, which has spanned decades, includes numerous accolades, including being named one of VH1’s 200 Top Icons of All Time and ranking number 37 on TV Guide‘s list of 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time.

However, in recent years, Lucci has faced some serious health challenges. In 2018, she underwent emergency heart surgery due to a major blockage in her arteries that could have resulted in a fatal heart attack. The symptoms she experienced, such as shortness of breath and chest pain, prompted her to seek medical attention, and tests revealed 90% blockage in the main artery of her heart and 70% blockage in another branch.

In a recent update, Lucci revealed that she had undergone a second emergency cardiac surgery. Although the symptoms were less severe this time, she was able to recognize them and act quickly. Dr. Richard Shlofmitz, chairman of cardiology at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York, shared that this time Lucci was not suffering a heart attack, but the symptoms still raised concerns, highlighting the importance of being aware of warning signs.

The second surgery came just two months before the tragic loss of her husband, Helmut Huber, who passed away at age 84. “After that, nothing seemed important—my health or anything else,” Lucci confessed. “I lost the love of my life, and that’s been awful, but I have friends who make me laugh and keep me out and about, and I’m determined to keep putting one foot in front of the other.”

Lucci has since opened up about her health issues to encourage other women to be proactive about their health. She emphasized the importance of listening to your body and being your own advocate. “Listen to your heart and act on it. Be your own best friend, be your own advocate. You’ll save your life,” she said.

In 2019, she walked the runway at the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection to further raise awareness.

Susan Lucci is grateful to her doctors for saving her life and is committed to encouraging others to take care of their hearts.
