Student Who Tore Out Her Own Eyeballs While High Speaks Out After Losing Her Job

Kaylee Muthart, the South Carolina student who gained widespread attention after a horrific incident in 2018, has shared her story following a recent job loss. Known for tearing out her own eyeballs while under the influence of methamphetamine, Muthart now reflects on her journey of recovery, expressing “no regrets” despite the traumatic events that have shaped her life.

A Tragic Turning Point

In 2018, Kaylee Muthart, just 20 years old, had a psychotic breakdown while high on methamphetamine. What started as an addiction to marijuana in high school escalated to meth use, both smoking and injecting the drug. After her mother urged her to go to rehab, Kaylee sought a final high before quitting. Unfortunately, this high led to one of the most shocking incidents in recent memory.

Muthart, while in a drug-induced state, became convinced that the world would end unless she tore out her own eyes. “I remember thinking that someone had to sacrifice something important to right the world, and that person was me,” she said in a recent interview. In a terrifying act of self-harm, Kaylee pushed her fingers into each eye, twisted them, and pulled them out of their sockets. Despite the horror of the act, her eyes were still attached to her head, though permanently damaged, leaving her blind.

The trauma of the event would forever alter her life, but it was also the moment that marked the beginning of her recovery. Afterward, she fought through addiction, and her journey to regain control over her life began.

Overcoming Addiction and Finding Work

Following the incident, Kaylee successfully kicked her drug habit and started working to support herself. She took a job washing dishes at a local restaurant while continuing her education. For Kaylee, this job was a small but significant step toward rebuilding her life and regaining her independence.

However, things took another unexpected turn. Kaylee was fired from her job after being caught sneaking food from the restaurant kitchen to feed a hungry cat and her kittens. Kaylee explained that she simply couldn’t ignore the starving animals, and she felt morally compelled to share her meal with them. She made it clear that, while she understood why she was let go, she had “no regrets” because she followed what she believed was right in her heart.

“I could not in good conscience leave every night, knowing that there was a kitty right there waiting to be fed,” she told the Mirror. “I gave it my meal that I would get for my shift – and ordered it especially for the kitty.”

While losing her job was hard, Kaylee expressed positivity about her choice, saying that her actions gave her peace of mind. “Being fired never feels good, but I could walk away, knowing that I did what I believed in my heart was right.”

A New Beginning and Moving Forward

Despite the setback, Kaylee’s outlook on life has become more positive. She now wears prosthetic eyeballs to help her feel more “normal” in public. Kaylee admits that she has moments of frustration and sadness, especially on nights when sleep eludes her, but overall, she is happier now than before the traumatic incident. “I’d rather be blind than dependent on drugs,” she shared.

Her journey highlights the resilience of the human spirit. Though the events she endured were harrowing, Kaylee has managed to rebuild her life, finding strength in the choices she’s made. Now free from addiction, she is determined to continue moving forward and finding happiness in new and meaningful ways.
