Wild animals have a way of showing up where we least expect them — but one San Francisco coyote took “making himself at home” to a new level.
Residents of the city’s western neighborhoods got quite the surprise when a young coyote decided to curl up for a nap on someone’s outdoor couch, refusing to move even after being discovered.
According to Animal Care & Control San Francisco (SFACC), the animal was spotted lounging peacefully on a patio sofa after a long night of wandering. When the homeowner stepped outside that morning, they were met not by their pet, but by a furry, wild intruder basking in the sun like he paid rent.
A Wild Nap in the Urban Jungle
Officer Mullen from SFACC was called to check on the visitor. The homeowner, worried the animal might be sick or injured, showed her the dozing coyote, still half-asleep and clearly enjoying the comfort of his newfound bed.
“I started talking to him, telling him it was time to get up,” Officer Mullen shared. “He looked at me, stretched, and calmly walked to the edge of the yard before hopping over the wall.”
Photos posted by the shelter show the coyote looking perfectly at ease — lying on the couch, soaking in the morning light. Mullen noted that the young male seemed healthy and likely had just left his den to explore the city.

SFACC reminded residents that urban coyotes are now a regular part of San Francisco’s landscape and encouraged people to report any that seem sick or hurt. “Thank you for helping us keep this population healthy and thriving in our urban jungle,” the shelter wrote.
The story quickly went viral, proving that sometimes, even in a big city, wildlife just wants a soft place to nap — and a reminder that animals can adapt in the most surprising, and charming, ways.
