Shania Twain, Canada’s biggest music star, has an inspiring life story that many people may not know about. Born into poverty in Timmins, Ontario, Shania faced immense struggles from a young age. Her family dealt with financial hardship, and her mother’s depression made life even more difficult. Shania, one of five children, had to grow up fast, learning to go without the basics like food, heating, and even electricity.
At school, Shania’s situation was tough. She often went without lunch and would secretly watch her classmates, hoping to catch leftover food. Music became her escape—she would head to the forest with her guitar, where she could lose herself in her songs.
By age eight, Shania was already performing in bars. Her mother recognized her talent and started taking her to local gigs. Despite the challenges, including working at McDonald’s to afford regular meals, Shania’s passion for music kept her going. As a teenager, she balanced school, working at McDonald’s, and performing at night, all while caring for her siblings.

Tragedy struck when Shania’s mother and stepfather died in a car accident when she was just 22. Left to care for her younger siblings, Shania took a job singing at a resort. This gig allowed her to have a home for her family and gave her the chance to pursue music seriously.
Her big break came when she sent a demo to record labels, and Mercury Nashville signed her. Shania’s musical style was developed alongside her husband and music producer, Robert “Mutt” Lange. They co-wrote and produced some of her biggest hits. As her fame grew, Shania became one of the most beloved musicians in the world.
However, her career faced a setback when she was diagnosed with Lyme disease, which affected her vocal cords. After surgery, Shania embraced her new, raspier voice and returned to the stage. But her personal life took another turn when she discovered her husband’s affair with her close friend. She found solace in the support of Frédéric Thiébaud, Marie-Anne Thiébaud’s husband. Their shared pain eventually blossomed into a romantic relationship, and they married in 2011.

Today, Shania reflects on her past without resentment. She acknowledges the ups and downs, from her challenging childhood to her incredible success. Her journey is a testament to resilience and the power of music.
