After the educational activity, researchers plan to conduct a detailed biological analysis, examining the fish’s internal organs, stomach contents, and tissue samples to better understand its diet, physiology, and potential migration patterns. Every piece of data collected could help scientists learn more about how warming oceans are reshaping marine biodiversity.


The Science Behind the Beauty

Opah are striking not just for their appearance but for their physiology. Their circular, flattened bodies and brilliant coloration make them look almost otherworldly. They are strong swimmers that can grow up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) long and weigh as much as 600 pounds (272 kilograms).

These fish are part of the pelagic ecosystem, meaning they live in open ocean waters rather than near the coast. They feed primarily on squid and small fish, helping maintain balance in deep-sea food chains.
