A bombshell book about the life of Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, has revealed that he allegedly had a cruel nickname for Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. The revelation, made in royal biographer Ingrid Seward’s book My Mother and I, has caused a stir among readers and sparked renewed debate about the tensions between Meghan and the royal family.
In the book, Seward claims that Prince Philip referred to Meghan Markle as “D.o.W.,” a nod to the “Duchess of Windsor” – Wallis Simpson, the American divorcée who married Edward VIII. This nickname was allegedly given because of the similarities Prince Philip saw between Markle and Simpson: both were glamorous, dark-haired, American divorcées who married into the royal family.

Meghan Markle was previously married to film producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2014 before she married Prince Harry. Similarly, Wallis Simpson’s marriage to Edward VIII led to their exile from the royal family after he abdicated the throne to marry her. Prince Philip’s comparison between the two women, given the controversial history of Wallis Simpson, paints a particularly harsh picture of his feelings toward Markle.
Many royal watchers have noted the similarities between Meghan and Edward VIII, who both faced public criticism and chose to step away from royal duties in pursuit of personal happiness. In a reflection on Prince Harry’s situation, royal expert Hugo Vickers pointed out how Harry’s situation mirrors that of Edward VIII, as both men seemed to radiate sadness after distancing themselves from royal life.
The nickname, though seemingly a simple reference, carries a heavy historical context, as Wallis Simpson became one of the most reviled figures in the royal family after her marriage to Edward VIII. The Queen Mother, in particular, was said to have a strong animosity toward Simpson and fought to prevent her from gaining the HRH title, which led to Simpson’s exclusion from royal circles.
