Phil Collins Reveals He Can “Barely Hold a Drumstick Anymore”

Phil Collins, the legendary drummer and lead singer of Genesis, has been a prominent figure in the music industry for decades, with a career that includes eight Grammy awards and more than 100 million albums sold, both as a solo artist and with Genesis. But as he ages, Collins is facing physical challenges that are impacting his ability to perform, particularly when it comes to playing the drums.

In a recent interview with BBC Breakfast, Collins shared that he can “barely hold a drumstick anymore” due to health issues. After undergoing surgery in 2009, he was left with dislocated vertebrae and nerve damage, which, along with a foot fracture, has made it increasingly difficult for him to play the drums. “I’d love to [play], but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand,” he admitted.

These physical challenges have led Collins to make the decision that his son, Nicholas, would take over drumming duties for the band’s reunion tour, The Last Domino. “Nic is a great drummer, but he is capable of sounding like early Phil,” said band member Tony Banks, which brought excitement for fans who would be able to hear Collins’ iconic drum parts played by his son.

Despite his health struggles, Collins remains involved with Genesis and is still performing, though he has expressed doubts about continuing to tour. “I’m kind of physically challenged a bit which is very frustrating because I’d love to be playing up there with my son,” Collins said. “I don’t know if I want to go out on the road anymore.” He emphasized that, given the band’s age, it may be time to “put it to bed” and move on from touring.

Collins’ journey with Genesis and his solo career has left an undeniable legacy, and while he may no longer be able to perform as he once did, his influence on music will continue to resonate with fans around the world.
