Hidey’s story began when her owner, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, was taken to a nursing home. Concerned neighbors spotted Hidey in poor condition and contacted the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center in Pittsburgh. Upon inspection, rescuers discovered that Hidey’s fur had become so matted it resembled dreadlocks, with some mats measuring 6 to 8 inches long. It was believed that she had gone without proper grooming for up to two years, causing the fur to mat severely.

A Shocking Discovery
Jenn Levitzki, a veterinarian at the shelter, called Hidey’s condition the worst case of matting she had ever seen. “(Hidey has) the worst matting I have ever seen, she has dreadlocks,” Levitzki commented, sharing her amazement at the extent of the neglect. The cat was sedated to ensure comfort during the shaving procedure, which ultimately removed over two pounds of matted fur from Hidey’s body.
The rescue team worked tirelessly to free her from the tangled mass of fur, revealing a much healthier cat underneath. Hidey’s transformation was nothing short of miraculous, and she appeared much more comfortable after the procedure.
A New Beginning
Following her rescue and grooming, Hidey was re-homed with a distant relative of her former owner, ensuring that she would have the care and attention she needed moving forward. The medical team at the shelter shared their relief and happiness with Hidey’s recovery, stating, “Our Medical team shaved off the pounds of intertwined fur from her body, and needless to say, this cat is feeling so much better now!”
