A mother is sounding the alarm after her teenage son barely survived a freak accident involving a phone charger, a metal necklace, and an extension cord — all while lying in bed.
Danielle Davis’s 16-year-old son, Rayce Ogdahl, was jolted awake on April 20, 2024, not by his phone alarm — but by an electrical surge that seared through his neck.
“I heard him shout ‘Mom!’ and he was standing in the hallway with burns around his neck,” Danielle recounted. “He said, ‘I’ve been electrocuted.’”
The cause? Rayce had rolled over in bed, wearing a metal necklace, which accidentally made contact with the exposed metal prongs of a charging plug in a nearby extension cord. The resulting electrical circuit caused second, third, and fourth-degree burns around his neck.
Doctors later told the family that the shock Rayce endured had enough amps to kill him. Miraculously, he stayed conscious and managed to call for help in time.
A Mother’s Terrifying Wake-Up Call
“It could have ended so differently,” Danielle said. “He saw sparks. His whole body hurt. He thought he was going to die.”
Rayce now has permanent scarring, including a visible burn pattern from his necklace. His mother says he’s much more cautious now, and their family is sharing his story as a wake-up call for other parents and teens.
Key Safety Lessons from the Near-Tragedy
Danielle’s message is clear:
-
Never sleep with your phone charging in bed.
-
Avoid wearing metal jewelry near electrical outlets or chargers.
-
Don’t use extension cords for phone chargers — they’re not designed for continuous low-voltage use.
-
Inspect cables regularly for damage or exposed prongs.
“No notification is worth your life,” she warns. “Please don’t charge your phone on your bed.”
