Melissa Hortman’s Beloved Dog Gilbert Dies After Shooting Tragedy

The heartache surrounding the tragic events that took the lives of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, on June 14, 2025, has been deepened by the loss of their beloved golden retriever, Gilbert. A loyal companion who became a beloved family member, Gilbert’s death has left many mourning the loss of both a cherished pet and a symbol of love and support.

Gilbert’s Journey with the Hortmans

Gilbert’s story began with an unlikely career path. In 2021, he was part of a service dog training program through the nonprofit Helping Paws. Originally intended to become a trained support animal, Gilbert’s natural friendly demeanor and desire to be around people made him an unsuitable candidate for service work. Instead of becoming a service dog, he was “fired” from his training, but this turn of events proved to be a blessing for the Hortman family, who welcomed him as a full-time pet.

Melissa Hortman, who had faced personal challenges following the January 6 Capitol attack, the pandemic, and the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, had formed a special bond with Gilbert. He was not just a pet, but a source of comfort during a difficult time. His presence was so strong that he became a fixture in her life, even popping into Zoom meetings at the State Capitol and climbing onto her lap, much to the amusement of her colleagues.

A Heartbreaking Turn of Events

Tragedy struck on June 14 when Gilbert was severely injured in the same shooting that took the lives of Rep. Hortman and her husband. The shooting, which also left Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife injured, ended in a manhunt, with suspect Vance Boelter captured later that night.

Gilbert, who had been with his family through thick and thin, did not survive the attack. According to Helping Paws, Gilbert was “with his people until the very end,” a testament to the deep bond between him and the Hortmans. Sadly, Gilbert had to be humanely euthanized by the couple’s adult children after the attack.

The Deep Connection Between Gilbert and the Hortmans

The relationship between Melissa Hortman and Gilbert was one of deep love and mutual affection. When Gilbert was briefly removed for additional training, her colleagues even joked about bringing him back, showing just how important he was to her. Rep. Jamie Long, a close friend, reflected that Gilbert’s “drop-out moment” was likely the happiest for Melissa, as she always considered him her true companion, beyond anything else.

Alyssa Golob, executive director of Helping Paws, acknowledged the sacrifice involved in training a service dog that might not stay with its trainer. She praised the Hortmans for their commitment to the cause, especially in raising a dog like Gilbert, who ultimately became a cherished member of their family.

Honoring Gilbert’s Memory

In honor of both Gilbert and the Hortmans, Helping Paws has launched a new fund in their name. The initiative aims to pair service dogs with veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD, ensuring that Gilbert’s legacy lives on in helping others who need the support he so freely gave.

Gilbert may not have fulfilled his intended role as a service dog, but in every other way, he was a hero. His story is a reminder of the powerful bond between humans and animals, and the deep, enduring love that pets can offer.

Rest in peace, Gilbert. You were truly one of a kind.
