In a heartbreaking twist, the bodies of Ilya Zhirnov, 25, and his girlfriend Kira Cherkasova, 22, were discovered in 2017, nearly 12 years after they went missing. The couple had disappeared in December 2005 after Ilya borrowed his father’s car to pick up Kira from work. Despite an extensive search at the time, the case was eventually closed due to a lack of evidence, leaving the families in a state of uncertainty. However, they never gave up hope that one day, Ilya and Kira would be found.
The car and the bodies of the couple were accidentally discovered by a local diving enthusiast exploring the waters near a local beach. Upon spotting the vehicle at the bottom of the Volga River in central Russia, the diver immediately alerted authorities. The car was pulled from the river the following day, and Ilya and Kira were identified by personal documents found inside the vehicle.
Authorities believe that the accident may have been caused by icy road conditions, leading the couple to lose control of the car, which ultimately ended up in the river. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
