On a rainy July afternoon in Byram, Mississippi, rescuers received a call that would soon turn into one of the muddiest and most unforgettable missions of their careers. A kitten had been spotted in a flooded marsh near a stormwater pond at an apartment complex — too weak, too small, and too scared to escape on her own.
What followed was a rescue story filled with determination, teamwork, and a whole lot of heart.
A Tiny Life in Danger
The kitten, later named Marsha, had somehow ended up stranded on a floating bog of vines and grasses above the water. Her minuscule weight — less than a pound — was the only thing keeping her from sinking through the fragile mat of roots into the water below.
“She was on a bog of growing grasses and vines,” explained Pippa Jackson, cofounder of the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) of Mississippi. “The bog was floating, and the kitten had found a woven maze of roots in the middle part.”
It was a miracle she hadn’t fallen in. But with the storm still raging and the pond’s current threatening to sweep her away, time was running out.

First Attempts and Setbacks
Kelly Collins, an ARF volunteer, hurried to the scene. She tried to coax the frightened kitten to safety, but Marsha kept hiding among the vines. Collins worried that moving closer would scare her — and that one wrong move might send the fragile kitten tumbling into the water.
Reluctantly, Collins had to leave, but the shelter staff refused to give up. As Jackson later wrote, “We knew the kitten had little chance of survival overnight, between the water flushing through the storm drain, snakes, and [her] getting weak and cold.”
Reinforcements Arrive
Jackson called in a team of ARF employees — who were also inmates from the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility. Soon, a group of determined rescuers in striped uniforms waded into the marsh, ready to save the kitten no matter how messy it got.
“She started SCREAMING to us, ‘HELP ME!’” Jackson recalled. “We began trying to find her, trying to figure out how to get to her without getting waist deep in the cold water and figure out where exactly she was.”
The scene turned surreal: rain pouring down, 14 inmates wading knee-deep in mud, slipping and sliding across the pond while neighbors looked on in amazement.

The Moment of Rescue
Finally, the rescuers spotted Marsha darting across the vines. Seizing the chance, one of them lunged forward and scooped her up before she could disappear again.
Cold, muddy, and terrified, the kitten was safe at last.
Marsha’s Road to Recovery
Back at ARF, Marsha received a warm bath and veterinary care. Despite her ordeal, she quickly showed her affectionate side.
“Marsha is quite affectionate, loves to snuggle and being held,” Jackson shared. “She is also partial to hamburgers!”
Over the months, the once-fragile kitten blossomed into a beautiful, playful, and loving young cat.
Waiting for a Forever Home
Today, Marsha is healthy, sassy, and sweet. She loves following staff around the shelter, curling up for snuggles, and charming everyone she meets.
“She’s something special,” Jackson wrote. “She’s sassy but incredibly sweet, loves snuggles, and followed me around all day in the cat room, curious about what all I was doing. Oh, and she’s GORGEOUS!”
Marsha’s days of pleading from the marsh are behind her — but one chapter is still unwritten: finding her forever family.

Final Thoughts
From the stormy bog of a Mississippi marsh to the safe arms of rescuers, Marsha’s story is a powerful reminder of what compassion can do. What could have been a tragedy became a tale of second chances, teamwork, and resilience.
Now, she waits for a family who will give her the happy ending she deserves — proof that even the smallest cries for help are worth answering.
