Karoline Leavitt, a White House press secretary, sparked widespread outrage after making a comment about former President Joe Biden that many labeled as “disgusting” and “rude.”
Leavitt was asked for her opinion on Biden’s speech, in which he addressed Social Security, and her response quickly gained attention. “My first reaction when seeing former President Biden was speaking tonight was, I’m shocked that he is speaking at nighttime,” Leavitt said. “I thought his bedtime was much earlier than his speech tonight.”
Her remark, which seemed to target Biden’s age, provoked backlash from many who deemed it disrespectful. Leavitt, who is the youngest person to ever hold the position of White House press secretary, then discussed former President Donald Trump’s stance on Social Security, emphasizing Trump’s commitment to protecting the benefits.
While her comments about Trump’s views on Social Security were typical of political discourse, it was her remark about Biden that caught everyone’s attention. Critics quickly condemned Leavitt’s comment, with many arguing that it lacked respect for a former U.S. president.
One person criticized Leavitt for her “lack of class,” suggesting she would eventually be in a similar situation as Biden due to the age gap between her and her husband. Others took to social media, expressing disappointment with her behavior. “No class at all. Shame on you. How old is your HUSBAND? You will be saying the same thing not far away,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “Very rude. She’s talking about a former US President. He deserves at least respect!” While some acknowledged Leavitt’s blunt nature, many felt her comment was immature and unnecessary, particularly when discussing a former president who had served the country.
Several users also expressed frustration with the tone of political discourse, with one person stating, “Why do they always have to be so rude and condescending? Finger-pointing and name-calling. You are there as the spokesperson. This isn’t an audition. Sick of this.” Others simply urged Leavitt to be more mindful of her comments, writing, “Karoline, you crossed the line!”
