Henry Winkler’s path to success was not easy. Despite being an accomplished actor and a beloved figure in Hollywood, his journey was filled with challenges, especially in his early years. One of the most significant hurdles he faced was dyslexia, a learning disability that went undiagnosed for many years. Winkler didn’t learn he had dyslexia until he was 31 years old. Early Struggles and Misunderstanding
Growing up, Winkler faced immense pressure from his parents, who had high expectations for him, especially in his education. They believed in the importance of schooling and, unfortunately, misunderstood his difficulties as laziness.
Winkler recalls being constantly criticized: “I was called lazy, I was called stupid, I was told I was not living up to my potential.” Despite these hurtful words, Winkler was giving his best, but he just couldn’t succeed in school. The punishments from his parents and the lack of understanding about his condition made his school years very difficult.
“I was grounded for most of my high school career. They thought if I stayed at my desk for 6 weeks at a time, I was going to get it,” Winkler said. The repeated failures and harsh punishments took a toll on his self-esteem, and he longed to fit in with his peers. However, his challenges persisted as he moved through school, preventing him from participating in things like school dances or plays.

Realizing the Struggle Wasn’t His Fault
It wasn’t until Winkler’s stepson began struggling in school and was diagnosed with dyslexia that Winkler himself considered he might have the same condition. It was at the age of 31 when Winkler finally understood the reason for his struggles: he too had dyslexia. This diagnosis came as a relief but also sparked anger.
“I got very angry. Because all of the arguments in my house with the short Germans who were my parents were for naught,” Winkler admitted. Learning about his condition helped him understand that his struggles were not due to laziness but rather a recognized learning challenge.
His Career and Overcoming Dyslexia
Even though Winkler’s struggles with reading continued throughout his career, he found creative ways to work around them. He became known for his role as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli in Happy Days, but even while on the show, he had difficulty with reading scripts.
“When we did Happy Days, I embarrassed myself for 10 years reading around that table,” Winkler confessed. “I stumbled over every word. I was completely embarrassed.” Despite his difficulties with reading, Winkler had a remarkable ability to memorize lines quickly. “Memorizing, if it’s written well, my brain is then able to suck it up like a vacuum cleaner,” he said.
His talent and dedication led him to success, but his journey was never without its struggles. Winkler’s story is a reminder that perseverance and determination can lead to greatness, even when the road is tough.

Giving Back and Helping Others with Dyslexia
After his diagnosis, Winkler decided to use his experience to help others. He wanted to inspire children and adults who faced the same struggles with reading and learning. Winkler wrote a children’s series called Hank Zipzer, featuring a boy with dyslexia. The series resonated with many children, and Winkler began receiving letters from young readers who related to Hank’s challenges.
In each letter, Winkler wrote back with an important message: “Your learning challenge will not stop you from meeting your dream. Only you will stop yourself from meeting your dream.” Winkler’s message to these children was clear: dyslexia may make learning harder, but it doesn’t mean they can’t achieve their goals.
A Legacy Beyond Hollywood
Despite his ongoing struggles with dyslexia, Winkler went on to achieve tremendous success in Hollywood, winning numerous awards and accolades for his acting career. In addition to his acting work, he has written several books and is now preparing to release his memoir in 2024. Yet, for all of his achievements, Winkler says that his proudest accomplishments are his books.
“Outside of my family, my proudest moment, no matter what I have achieved, are the books,” Winkler shared. His determination to help others through his writing is a testament to his character and his desire to make a positive impact on the world.
