Harrison Ford Rescues Boy Scout Who Accidentally Signaled His Helicopter in Yellowstone

Harrison Ford’s heroism isn’t just confined to the big screen. In 2001, the legendary actor played a real-life role as a rescuer when he saved a lost 13-year-old Boy Scout, Cody Clawson, during a hiking trip in Yellowstone National Park.

A Dangerous Situation

Cody had gotten lost while hiking in the park, and after 18 hours of being stranded, he decided to seek shelter in a nearby cave, battling rain and sleet while wearing only a T-shirt, shorts, and sandals. While resting, he was suddenly awakened by the sound of a helicopter overhead—an aircraft that, unbeknownst to him, was piloted by Harrison Ford himself.

A Clever Signal

Using a technique he had learned in the Boy Scouts, Cody grabbed his belt buckle and reflected sunlight towards the helicopter, hoping to attract attention. His efforts worked, and Ford’s helicopter soon landed to rescue him.

The Encounter with Han Solo

Cody described the moment he met Ford as surreal. He immediately recognized Ford’s voice and said, “The way he said ‘hello’ reminded me so much of his role of Han Solo in Star Wars.” Overwhelmed with excitement, Cody exclaimed, “Oh my God, Han Solo has just rescued me. How cool is that?”

Ford, ever the humble hero, greeted Cody and joked, “Boy, you sure must have earned a merit badge for this one.” Cody replied that he had already earned that particular badge, which made the actor laugh.

A Life-Changing Moment

The experience left a lasting impact on Cody, especially regarding his perspective on celebrities. He shared, “What he did gave me a different perspective on stars. They sometimes get portrayed as snobby people, but there really are good, generous people out there. And to me, Harrison Ford is one of those good people we’re lucky to have as an influence on our lives.”

When Cody told his friends about the encounter, they asked if he had gotten an autograph. Cody replied with a smile, “No, but I got a hug and a handshake, and that’s better.”
