A trip to one of Gordon Ramsay’s high-end eateries turned into an expensive lesson for a diner who misread the menu, ending up with an eye-watering bill that left him stunned.
Jeffrey Paige and his girlfriend visited Ramsay’s restaurant in Atlantic City, excited to treat themselves to a meal. They had set their sights on the American Wagyu beef, renowned for its incredible texture and rich flavor. However, things took an unexpected turn when Jeffrey decided to try something else on the menu.
The diner came across the “real deal” Triple Seared Japanese A5 steak, commonly known as Kobe beef, a cut celebrated for its supreme quality. Mistakenly, Jeffrey believed the A5 steak was priced at $35 for four ounces, a significant difference compared to the $84 for eight ounces of Wagyu beef.

“I had never had real deal Kobe,” Jeffrey said, unaware of the price discrepancy. Unfortunately, after finishing their meals, they were left shocked when the bill arrived, totaling $600—much higher than they had expected.
Confused, the couple double-checked the menu and discovered their mistake: the Kobe steak was actually priced at $35 per ounce, not every four ounces. Despite the hefty bill, Jeffrey didn’t regret his decision. “It was an amazing meal, and we’re glad we could support the restaurant and its staff during these challenging times,” he said.
Jeffrey took to Reddit to share his experience, humorously reflecting on his blunder: “I wish Chef Ramsay was there to come out and call me a doughnut for messing this up.” Despite the costly error, he added, “I enjoyed the hell out of it. No regrets, baby!”
For those wondering if this type of mistake is rare, Jeffrey wasn’t the only one to face a hefty bill at a high-end restaurant. Many others shared similar experiences. One commenter recalled an experience with A5 steak in Kobe, saying, “6oz of A5 nearly killed me in Kobe, the richest food I’ve ever eaten. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
Others chimed in, sharing tales of splurging on fine dining and walking away poorer but completely satisfied. One person mentioned visiting a top-tier Tokyo restaurant and walking out $1,200 lighter but convinced it was worth every penny.
Despite the price mistake, Jeffrey remains a fan of Gordon Ramsay and his restaurants. “My family and I are huge Gordon Ramsay fans. We watch his shows—Hell’s Kitchen, MasterChef—and I’ve been to his restaurants before. The steak and the experience were unforgettable,” he said.
In the end, although the bill was far higher than anticipated, Jeffrey and his girlfriend walked away with a memorable experience and a new story to tell. So, next time you’re dining at a high-end restaurant, be sure to double-check the menu before diving into those expensive delicacies!
