Founded in 2016, Reteti is the first community-owned elephant sanctuary in Africa. Its mission is deeply human: to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned calves that have lost their mothers to drought, poaching, or human conflict. When these tiny elephants arrive, they are often weak, scared, and clinging to survival. That’s when the keepers — many of them local Samburu men and women — step in as family.
