Georgia Boy Suffers Severe Burns in Sleepover Prank Gone Horribly Wrong — Now His Recovery Is Inspiring Thousands

What began as an innocent New Year’s sleepover turned into a nightmare for 12-year-old Trey West from Georgia — and the story has shaken parents and communities nationwide.

While Trey was sleeping at a neighbor’s apartment in Tifton, Georgia, three boys — ages 12 to 15 — were playing video games. But things took a horrifying turn when one of them dumped boiling water on Trey’s face, leaving him with second-degree burns and skin peeling off his cheeks.

“He was sleeping… and they just poured it on him,” said his mother, Tiffany West, in an emotional interview. “I was mad, hurt, in shock. I just saw red — I needed to get him help.”

The burns were so severe, Trey was rushed to a specialized burn center in Augusta, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors say his recovery will take up to two weeks — but the emotional healing may take far longer.

A Shocking Betrayal

Adding to the heartbreak? The alleged pranksters were Trey’s own friends — boys he trusted.

“It’s shocking to know your friends are capable of this,” said his aunt, Nachelle Austile. “He never thought something like this could happen to him.”

Trey is now home recovering. Though the worst of the physical damage is being treated, family members say the emotional trauma is still fresh. “He’s numb,” said his mom. “He doesn’t show much emotion about it at all.”

The three boys involved were arrested, then released to their families. They await a court hearing next month, and the community is calling for youth accountability and greater awareness of the dangers of reckless pranks.

Hope, Healing & Support

Amid the tragedy, something beautiful is unfolding — the outpouring of love and support from the community.

Trey’s mom shared on Facebook:

“I woke up to SO much LOVE being shown to my son! Every donation, gift, encouraging word, and prayer has put a smile on his face. I drop to my knees every day thanking God that my baby is still here.”

She later shared a touching video of Trey smiling and dancing with his baby sister, captioned:

“He’s healing beautifully. Nobody but God.”

Trey’s journey is far from over, but his resilience — and the community’s response — is a testament to the power of compassion in times of crisis.
