In the spring of 2019, a distress call about a wounded dog tied to a fence led volunteers from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) to a heartbreaking discovery. What they found shocked them to the core: a dog whose face was swollen to nearly five times its normal size, tied up and left to suffer in the sun.
A Heartbreaking Discovery
The dog, later named Marco, had been abandoned and left in the sweltering heat with no care or compassion. His body was covered in infected wounds, and he was in so much pain that he could barely move. Despite the horrific condition he was in, Marco greeted the rescuers with gentle trust, as if to say, “I still believe in you.”
“His wounds went unattended, and he sat there in the sun suffering,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared on Facebook.
Despite everything he had endured, Marco was not bitter. He still showed hope, kindness, and trust in humans, which would play a crucial role in his incredible journey to recovery.
A Fight for His Life
Once Marco was safely in the hands of rescuers, he was rushed to SRSL’s animal hospital for immediate treatment. Upon arrival, veterinarians discovered that Marco was septic, a life-threatening condition caused by the infection in his wounds. What followed was months of intensive treatment, including IV fluids, antibiotics, pain medication, and round-the-clock care.
The road to recovery was long, and at times uncertain, but Marco never gave up. What was truly remarkable was his unwavering love for humans. Despite everything he had been through, Marco continued to look to people for love and affection.
“The most amazing part is he still loves and trusts humans,” SRSL shared. “He still looks to them for love and gives love.”
The Transformation
As time went on, Marco’s swelling gradually went down, revealing the handsome, affectionate dog that he truly was. With each passing day, his personality began to shine through: playful, sweet, and full of energy. He was a pup full of life, and his spirit remained unbroken despite the trauma he had suffered.
Once Marco was strong enough, he was placed in foster care with Katie, a dedicated SRSL volunteer. Katie quickly grew attached to Marco, not just because of his adorable face, but because of his loving, resilient nature. Before long, Katie made the decision to adopt him permanently.
Today, Marco is living his best life, thriving in a home filled with love and care. He spends his days stealing blankets, watching the neighborhood from his favorite bay window, and receiving endless affection from his forever family.
“Marco is spoiled rotten… like, really rotten,” Katie said with a smile. “He’s the perfect combination of silly, sweet, smart, and protective.”
