Food Allergy Tragedy: The Story of Hannah Glass and Her Fatal Reaction to a Brownie

 

Hannah Glass, a 19-year-old college freshman at Maranatha Baptist University in Wisconsin, tragically lost her life after a fatal allergic reaction to a brownie she received from a friend. The heartbreaking incident highlights the risks of food allergies and the importance of vigilance when it comes to food safety.

The Tragic Incident

On November 5, 2024, just two days after celebrating her 19th birthday, Hannah bit into a homemade brownie and immediately realized something was wrong. Despite being careful about her known peanut allergy, she was unaware that the brownie contained roasted peanut flour, a gluten-free alternative made from peanuts. This ingredient, while safe for those with gluten sensitivities, proved deadly for Hannah, whose severe peanut allergy made even trace amounts of peanuts life-threatening.

According to her father, David Glass, the moment Hannah took a second bite, she began to feel unwell. Her reaction was swift and severe. She broke out in hives, vomited, and used Benadryl to manage her symptoms. However, the situation worsened dramatically when she climbed into her bed to rest.

The Rapid Decline

As Hannah lay on her bed, the anaphylactic reaction worsened. Her father recounted how she suddenly gasped for breath, which caused her right lung to collapse, exacerbating her condition. In a desperate attempt to help her, David carried his unresponsive daughter outside, waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

Paramedics worked tirelessly to revive Hannah, but her heart had stopped for four minutes. She was rushed to Watertown Hospital and later transferred to Froedtert Hospital, where she was placed on a ventilator. Despite efforts to stabilize her, doctors confirmed that the majority of her brain had been critically damaged due to swelling from multiple seizures.

Brain Damage and the Final Goodbye

Hannah’s parents, watching helplessly as medical professionals fought to save their daughter, were devastated by the news that there was no hope for recovery. The brain damage was irreversible, and after several days of intensive care, the family was faced with an agonizing decision.

On November 10, 2024, Hannah was given a traditional “Honor Walk,” a beautiful tribute as she was taken to the operating room for organ donation. Over 300 people lined the hallway, offering their support as Hannah’s family said their final goodbyes.

A Legacy of Giving

While the loss of Hannah Glass is heartbreaking, her death brought life to others. Through her organ donation, four people received lifesaving transplants. Her family finds solace in the knowledge that Hannah’s final act was one of selflessness, saving the lives of others despite her tragic passing.

Her parents have since shared their grief and called for greater awareness of food allergies, especially in social settings where allergens may not be clearly labeled or disclosed. “Always be aware. Make sure your EpiPens are up to date,” David Glass advised, a message of caution for others who might be at risk.

It underscores the importance of food allergy awareness and preparedness, particularly for those with severe reactions to common allergens. While her life was tragically cut short, her legacy lives on in the people whose lives were saved by her organ donations and in the hearts of those who loved her.
