In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey, Emma Heming Willis revealed that she considered divorcing her husband, Bruce Willis, before his devastating diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), which was confirmed in 2023.
FTD, a rare and incurable form of dementia, affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, leading to significant changes in behavior, language, and motor skills. Willis, who had stepped back from acting the previous year, was diagnosed after several years of unexplained symptoms.
Marriage Struggles Before the Diagnosis
Emma opened up about the challenges she faced in her marriage before Willis’ diagnosis. “We weren’t aligning on things we used to,” she shared with Oprah. “Our values didn’t seem to be matching anymore.”
She admitted to contemplating divorce during this time. “100 percent thought about divorce, yes. I didn’t understand how our relationship was so connected, we were so enmeshed. And yet, all of a sudden, things started falling apart.”
Emma explained that these struggles went on for a few years before both she and Bruce felt the need to seek medical advice. “I was just annoyed with him. I didn’t understand what was happening,” she said. “We just weren’t aligned and I didn’t know why. He wasn’t raising his hand about anything, and I did contemplate divorce.”
The Reality of Bruce’s Diagnosis
When Oprah asked Emma if Bruce truly understood the reality of his diagnosis after it was confirmed in 2022, she expressed gratitude that he did not fully grasp the severity of it. “I don’t think it landed, and I’m grateful for that,” Emma explained.
Changes in Family Life
In a separate interview with ABC News, Emma shared how their living situation has evolved due to Bruce’s condition. She revealed that Bruce now resides in a second home away from their daughters, Mabel (13) and Evelyn (11). “Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs,” she explained.
This decision was one of the hardest the family had to make, but Emma emphasized that it was in the best interest of their children and Bruce’s well-being.
A New Normal
Today, Bruce lives in a one-story house with a full-time care team. Emma continues to visit regularly, focusing on staying connected with her husband in a warm and supportive environment. “When we go over, either we’re outside, or we’re watching a movie… it’s just really about being able to be there, and connect with Bruce,” she shared.
Emma noted how many of Bruce’s friends continue to show up for him, bringing love and joy into his life. “It is a house that is filled with love, and warmth, and care, and laughter,” she said, reflecting on the support system they have built.
