A rare smile can say more than words. In Killorglin, Ireland, one rescued donkey let everyone know exactly how he felt—beaming from ear to ear after a dramatic escape from rising floodwaters.
A Close Call in County Kerry
After a storm battered the region, the donkey’s stable gate was damaged, leaving him to wander into a nearby field. Overnight, relentless rain caused the river to burst its banks, trapping the donkey in deep, freezing water by morning.
Local animal rescue group Animal Heaven Animal Rescue (AHAR) sounded the alarm with a plea for help on Facebook. Mike Fleming, a member of the Killorglin Rowing Club, answered the call.
Rescue Against the Odds
Armed with a rope and a buoyancy aid, Mike and the AHAR team waded into the icy water. Carefully, they secured the donkey and guided him through the flood, finally bringing him to dry land. Relief washed over everyone—but the biggest reward was still to come.
The Donkey’s Grateful Smile
Wrapped in towels, fed warm mash, and examined by a vet, the donkey—now named Mike after his rescuer—did something unforgettable: he smiled. The moment was captured in a now-viral photo, his joy and gratitude unmistakable.
Mike is recovering at the animal shelter, safe and snug while his stable is repaired. The vet started him on antibiotics as a precaution, but with care and kindness, his outlook is bright.
A Reminder of Compassion
The sight of a grateful donkey’s smile says it all: small acts of courage can change a life. In a world that needs more kindness, Mike’s story is proof that good people—and happy endings—are still out there.
