Crushed by a Forklift at 19, This Man Chose to Amputate Half His Body to Survive—Now He’s Inspiring Millions

In a moment that would change his life forever, 19-year-old Loren Schauers from Montana made a choice no one should ever have to make: amputate the lower half of his body, or die. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary.

The Accident That Changed Everything

In September 2019, Loren was operating a forklift across a bridge when it plunged 50 feet down, crushing him beneath its four-ton weight. Remarkably, Loren stayed conscious, even as his right arm was destroyed and his entire lower body was pinned.

“The doctors gave me a choice,” Loren recalled. “Do you want to live like this, or die with the life you had?”

The Courage to Live

Surrounded by family and his devoted girlfriend Sabia, Loren chose life. That meant undergoing a hemicorporectomy, a surgery so rare and extreme that it involves removing everything below the waist—including the pelvis and internal organs.

Sabia said goodbye to him six times, believing each might be the last. But he survived, proving doctors wrong at every turn.

Loren Schauers, a young laborer from Montana, was living an ordinary life — until September 2019, when everything changed in an instant.

Faced with a life-or-death decision, the courageous teenager made the unimaginable choice to have half of his body amputated, all to survive.

As per reports, 19-year-old Loren Schauers, of Great Falls, Montana, was in the process of driving a forklift truck across a bridge when it fell and plummeted 50-feet to the ground. The teenager was left trapped under the four-ton vehicle.

Loren, conscious the entire time, watched as his right arm was crushed and the bottom half of his body was pinned down by the truck.

The Road to Recovery

Loren’s strength didn’t end in the operating room. Though doctors predicted an 18-month recovery, he was released in just three—thanks to intense rehab, specialized treatment, and sheer determination.

Today, Loren shares his story through a YouTube channel with over 639,000 subscribers, offering raw insight into his physical challenges, bathroom routines, and emotional journey.

He uses a colostomy bag and nephrostomy tubes, explaining:

“That’s how I poop, pee, and fart.”

Respect, Love, and Boundaries

As public attention grew, so did the personal questions—some crossing the line. When asked about their intimacy, Sabia drew a clear boundary:

“It’s disrespectful. Just because our lives are different doesn’t mean you can ask what you wouldn’t ask anyone else.”

But they continue to share what they’re comfortable with, answering questions on friendships, mental health, and living with a disability.

Still Dreaming, Still Living

Now married, Loren and Sabia are making plans to travel and start a family, showing the world what true resilience looks like. Despite pain and setbacks, Loren says:

“You can’t focus on what you’ve lost. Live life to the fullest with what you do have.”
