Life with animals can bring the most unexpected stories. In the Sri Lankan city of Kandy, a tiny wild boar changed one couple’s world when she decided she was part of the pack — and a dog at heart.
When jewellers Dora Wei and Nuwan Hemachandra came home from a camping trip in September 2020, they found a small box waiting at their doorstep. Inside was a newborn wild boar — cold, frightened, and barely alive. Their gardener had discovered her alone in the jungle. Believing the baby had been separated from her mother, Dora and Nuwan named her Yezhu and started searching online for how to keep her alive.
A Fragile Start in Life
Raising a wild animal is not easy. The couple learned to feed her every two hours, kept her warm with water bottles, and built her a safe space in their living room. The nights were long, but they refused to give up. “It was life or death,” Dora said. “She was crying for food every few hours, and we knew she wouldn’t survive alone.”
Their rescue dog, a Labrador named Biu Biu, stepped in as an unlikely mother. She stayed beside Yezhu, keeping her calm and warm. Within days, the bond was unbreakable. Yezhu began following Biu Biu everywhere — eating, sleeping, and even playing like a dog.

Becoming One of the Pack
Soon Yezhu was running with the family’s three other dogs — Benjamin, Ginger, and Coco. She learned their habits and routines, copying every move. When the dogs went on walks, she trotted beside them. When they ate, she joined their bowl. Dora laughed, saying, “She still thinks Biu Biu is her mother, even though she’s twice her size now.”
Caring for animals often reveals how intelligent and emotional they are. Wild boars are naturally clean and clever, and Yezhu proved it. She quickly became house-trained without much effort. The family even built her a small home in the garden, complete with a pool for cooling off, but Yezhu preferred staying inside with her pack — the dogs.
Life, Love, and Loyalty
Over time, Yezhu grew stronger and confident. She still sleeps beside Biu Biu, often climbing onto her as if she were a puppy again. The two share everything — meals, naps, even swimming sessions. “She doesn’t know she’s a wild boar,” said Nuwan. “She just knows she’s loved.”
For Dora and Nuwan, adopting Yezhu wasn’t a plan — it was a calling. “We didn’t expect this,” Dora said. “But she became family. We love her like our own child.”
