At South Africa’s Mala Mala Game Reserve, a trio of klipspringers (small mountain antelope) escaped a pack of wild dogs by pulling off a daring cliffside stand that left rangers and onlookers stunned.
Caught on camera by guides Gareth van Rooyen, Michael Botes, and Steff McWilliam, the hunt began as a typical afternoon safari… until 21 wild dogs locked onto three klipspringers in their sights.
A Life-or-Death Cliffside Standoff
The dogs gave chase, pushing the tiny antelope toward a steep rocky cliff. But the klipspringers knew exactly what to do. With incredible poise, they climbed the rock face and stood still—balancing perfectly on tiny ledges using their specially adapted hooves.
Wild dogs, despite their speed and strength, aren’t built for climbing. The younger dogs of the pack tried to pursue, creeping closer to the frozen klipspringers, but the terrain proved too difficult. Eventually, the dogs gave up and backed off.

The sighting reminded rangers that life in the wild isn’t just about strength—strategy and adaptation matter. Klipspringers have unique downward-pointing hooves that allow them to move like ballerinas over sharp rocks, giving them a survival advantage in mountainous landscapes.
While wild dogs are top predators, they’re ground runners—not climbers. Gareth noted that even leopards or caracals would have had a better chance here. And the klipspringers? This wasn’t even their first time facing such danger. The same group had reportedly escaped another pack of dogs before!
