A pack of endangered African wild dogs was caught in a tragic encounter while relocating their pups to a new den. What began as a routine move quickly turned into a devastating clash with their greatest enemy: lions.
The dramatic scene unfolded near Nkaya Pan, south of Satara, where wildlife filmmaker Liza Kruger witnessed the intense moment. The adult wild dogs were seen guiding their litter of 10 pups along the H1-3 road — a common practice when moving dens to avoid predators. But ironically, it was during this move that they stumbled into even greater danger.
Life and Death in the African Wilderness
From the start, the adults were on high alert, nervously watching for threats. Two hyenas trailing behind the group appeared to be the main concern. The parents repeatedly checked their surroundings, leaving their pups briefly in the grass by the roadside while they investigated.
But as they prepared to return, a far more dangerous predator appeared — three male lions. As the adult dogs moved closer, they were met with a horrifying sight: one of their pups lying motionless on the road.
The tiny wild dog suddenly tried to get up and flee, but the lion pounced. Despite its desperate attempts to defend itself, the cub was quickly overpowered. One lion picked up the squealing pup and dropped it into the long grass, sealing its fate.
