Animals and Miracles: Deer Gives Birth to Triplets in Her Human Friend’s Backyard

Sometimes life delivers its quiet wonders right where we least expect them.
In a quiet Ohio neighborhood, TV news anchor Gabe Spiegel looked out his window and found a wild deer he knew — a gentle doe he’d named Ruby — standing in his backyard.

Within minutes, what began as an ordinary morning turned into something extraordinary.

The Return of Ruby

Ruby wasn’t a stranger. For years, she’d wandered through Spiegel’s yard, sometimes resting in the shade, sometimes grazing along the fence line. But this time, she’d come with purpose.

“She walked right up to the patch of grass and just settled in,” Spiegel told The Dodo. “A little while later, I realized she was going into labor.”

Before long, Ruby gave birth to a single tiny fawn — trembling, slick with dew, and already lifting its head. But her work wasn’t done.

A Rare Sight in Nature

By day’s end, Ruby had delivered three healthy babies — an astonishing event, considering that triplet births make up only about 2 percent of all deer pregnancies.

“It was quite a sight,” Spiegel said. “To witness that up close… it felt sacred.”

He watched quietly as Ruby cleaned each newborn and nestled them in the tall grass. They stayed through the evening, resting beneath a maple tree before disappearing into the woods the next morning — a new family of four.

A Friendship That Lasts

This wasn’t Ruby’s first visit. Over the past four years, she’s chosen Spiegel’s yard twice before to give birth — bringing fawns he affectionately named Opal and Jade.

Now, she’d returned once more, trusting the same patch of ground to bring new life safely into the world.

“They’re regular visitors now,” Spiegel said. “And these three little ones — Sapphire, Topaz, and Diamond — they’ll always have a place here.”

The Beauty of Familiar Wildness

Stories like Ruby’s remind us of how thin the line is between the wild and the human. When animals feel safe enough to share their most vulnerable moments near us, it’s not just a coincidence — it’s trust.

In that small Ohio backyard, a mother deer chose a friend, a home, and a little patch of earth to continue her story.
A quiet moment — but a rare and timeless one — where animals and humans meet in the shared rhythm of life.
