Inspired by her teenage daughter Donna’s involvement with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Gloria stepped up. By June 1963, the situation was so tense that the governor declared martial law, sending in 800 National Guardsmen. It was during this military occupation that the famous photograph was taken.
