Casper, a two-year-old Great Pyrenees, is not just any farm dog—he’s a trained livestock guardian whose job is to protect sheep. One night in early November, his owner John Wierwiller heard strange noises outside his home in Decatur, Georgia. Looking out the window, he saw his sheep cornered by a pack of coyotes. But in the middle of the chaos was Casper, standing firm and ready to defend.
As the coyotes moved in, Casper launched into action. In a fierce 30-minute battle, he killed eight of the predators and chased away the remaining three. Though none of the sheep were injured, Casper suffered serious wounds. His skin and part of his tail were torn during the fight, and after chasing the coyotes away, he disappeared into the woods.
His owner feared the worst. But in a surprising turn of events, Casper returned home two days later—bloody, exhausted, and in need of urgent care. “He was looking at me like, ‘Boss, stop staring at me. Just help,’” Wierwiller recalled emotionally.
Casper was rushed to a vet and then transferred to LifeLine Animal Project, where he underwent multiple surgeries and received critical care. Thanks to the dedication of veterinary staff and donations from the public, Casper began to recover. In fact, a GoFundMe campaign raised over $15,000 to help with his medical bills.

Now on the road to recovery, Casper is slowly getting back to his old self. While he’s still cautious and healing, vets believe he may not even need skin grafts—an incredible outcome for a dog that nearly lost his life.
