When it comes to animals behaving badly, this California bear might just take the cookie — literally.
Residents of Monrovia, Los Angeles County, have grown used to seeing bears wander through their streets, but one furry visitor has taken things to a whole new level. Nicknamed “Oreo”, the bear has become somewhat of a local celebrity after breaking into the same home — twice — in search of his favorite treat: Oreo cookies.
Caught in the Act
The first incident happened earlier this month when Oreo snuck into a family’s car and made off with a pack of Oreos from their grocery bags. A week later, the same bear returned — this time climbing through a window to raid the kitchen directly.
Footage shared by local news stations shows the bold intruder strolling through the home with a blue pack of cookies clamped in his jaws before casually retreating back outside.
“I was scared to death,” one neighbor said. “He was so close — that never happened before.”
According to Animal Control, Oreo’s cookie heists are part of a growing pattern. Bears in Monrovia are becoming increasingly comfortable around humans, often venturing into neighborhoods in search of food.

Bears Taking Over the Suburbs
Encounters like this are no longer rare. One local recalled a similar break-in in 2023, when another bear raided her garage and stole a chocolate cake right out of the fridge.
Experts say the bears’ boldness comes from easy access to food — and a lack of fear after years of peaceful coexistence. “For the last decade, they’ve slowly started claiming more territory,” said one resident. “Now, they think our yards belong to them.”
While Oreo has become something of a folk hero, wildlife officials are urging residents to stay cautious and secure their homes. Cute or not, a bear with a sweet tooth is still a wild animal.
