When it comes to animals, surprises often arrive when you least expect them — but few are as adorable as what one woman in Australia discovered after a wild night of wind and rain.
Emma Jane Kidd, from the hills of Western Australia, went outside after the storm and noticed something unusual: her dog Merlin’s bed was already occupied. Curled up together in the cozy blanket were three tiny, trembling creatures.
At first, she couldn’t tell what they were. But after looking closer, Kidd realized they were baby quendas — also known as southern brown bandicoots, small marsupials native to southwestern Australia.
A Surprising Rescue
Startled by the dog and the humans, the mother quenda darted away into the night, leaving her babies behind. Concerned for their safety, Kidd immediately called the Darling Range Wildlife Shelter, a local organization that specializes in rescuing wild animals.
Soon, rescuers arrived to collect the frightened triplets and bring them to safety. Shelter workers were stunned by the discovery.
“It’s not unusual to see quendas in the hills,” a shelter representative said. “But finding them snuggled in a dog’s bed on someone’s veranda — that’s a first.”
The quendas were healthy but too young to survive alone. They’re now being cared for at the shelter until they’re old enough to return to the wild, where they belong.

“They aren’t dogs,” the shelter wrote in a post that quickly went viral. “If you find wildlife in need, contact licensed rehabilitators right away. Don’t try to raise them yourself.”
Now, thanks to quick thinking and kindness, the three young quendas have a second chance at life — proof that even small acts of compassion can make a big difference for the world’s most vulnerable animals.
