When it comes to animals, few sights are as striking as an albino squirrel — and one lucky photographer in Edinburgh has turned a rare encounter into something unforgettable.
Richard Waugh, a 51-year-old software developer and passionate photographer, recently captured incredible photos of a pure white albino squirrel that visits the area outside his flat. The beautiful creature, which he’s affectionately named Lexy, has become a familiar guest, appearing a couple of times each week.
“I was heading out to the shops when I saw her running around,” Richard said. “Luckily, I had my camera with me. She seemed in a good mood and even posed for a few shots.”
Albino squirrels are exceptionally rare — estimates suggest that only one in 100,000 is born with the genetic mutation that removes pigment from their fur, skin, and eyes. Their unique white coloring makes them both stunning and vulnerable, often standing out to predators. But Lexy seems to be doing just fine, thriving among Edinburgh’s trees and gardens.
Richard, who’s been spotting her for nearly four years, says she often disappears for weeks before reappearing as if to say hello. Occasionally, he leaves out a few nuts for her — though he insists she doesn’t rely on handouts.
“She’s cheeky,” he said. “Sometimes she grabs a nut and runs off, glancing back from the trees. Other times, she sits still like she’s posing for photos.”

Despite her delicate looks, Lexy holds her own among other wildlife. Richard says she’s fast, alert, and confident — “she gives as good as she gets if anyone tries to push her around.”
Stories like this remind us why animals continue to amaze. Nature’s rarest moments often happen quietly, right outside someone’s window — if we’re lucky enough to notice.
