How the Sea Lion’s Escape Unfolded
Ernest and Viesia Godek were enjoying a morning of fishing and crabbing in their small boat when they noticed a trio of orcas—also called killer whales—surfacing nearby. Orcas are apex predators and often hunt seals and sea lions in these waters.
Mark Malleson, a whale-watching guide and research assistant, spotted the same animals and tried to warn the couple. As the killer whales dived and silently approached, the tension grew. Suddenly, the Godeks heard a massive bang on the hull of their boat—a moment that would stick with them forever.
Out of nowhere, a massive California sea lion, weighing close to 800 pounds, erupted from the water. The desperate animal had spotted the hunting orcas and made a split-second decision: leap for the nearest “island”—the Godeks’ small fishing boat.
The first jump landed the sea lion half on the boat’s edge, nearly tipping it over. The second leap actually flipped the boat on its side before it righted itself. Water began to pour in as the animal tried to escape its predators. The Godeks, in shock, could do little but hang on and try to head back to shore.

Respect for Nature and Wildlife
Even seasoned researchers were stunned by the raw force of the moment. “If that animal had landed in the boat, somebody could have gotten seriously hurt, just from the sheer size or from the teeth,” Malleson explained.
The Godeks’ story quickly became a stark reminder: nature doesn’t always give warnings, and wildlife will do anything to survive. While they escaped physically unharmed, their boat was swamped and their nerves shaken. “My wife was pale white when I looked at her,” Ernest recalled. “Nature and wildlife is indeed to be respected.”

Marine experts say orca activity is on the rise around Vancouver Island. Jared Towers, a researcher with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, called this “the new normal.” As the orca population grows and adapts, encounters between orcas, sea lions, and even humans are becoming more common.
Wildlife professionals urge all boaters to learn marine safety rules and never approach or interfere with animals in distress. Interfering with an orca hunt, for example, can put humans and animals at even greater risk.
