When rescuers from the Lancaster County SPCA found him, they knew he needed more than just a shelter. He needed a second chance. So they reached out to Diamonds in the Ruff, a New York–based rescue that works closely with the SPCA.
“When we learned about Stevie, we immediately knew we had to make him part of our rescue family,” a spokesperson for Diamonds in the Ruff said.

When Stevie first arrived in New York, his rescuers realized just how much he had endured. He was blind, covered in fleas, missing patches of fur, and battling worms. Even worse — vets discovered a corn cob lodged in his intestines, which required emergency surgery.
“He’s been through so much — pain, fear, and neglect — but he never gave up,” said Erin Boyd, Stevie’s foster mom.
At first, Stevie was terrified of his new surroundings.
“He slept most of the way home,” Boyd recalled. “But he would start growling and barking every so often in his crate. We knew he was just protecting himself. When we got home, he wouldn’t come out.”
So they waited. They spoke softly. They let him learn, at his own pace, that not all humans hurt.
And slowly — Stevie began to trust.
Discovering Comfort for the First Time

“We knew he had probably never had anything soft to sleep on before, so we gave him a bed,” she said. “As soon as he felt how soft it was, he got so excited and started jumping for joy.”

“He’s so smart,” Boyd said. “He can find his way from the backyard, through the garage, and up the three steps into the house. He knows where to wait for treats, and he even knows how to jump on my ottoman to get on the bed.”
Stevie has a routine now — he naps, takes walks, plays with squeaky toys, and loves giving gentle kisses. Every step he takes is filled with gratitude, every nap a small victory for a dog who once slept in the dirt.
Waiting for His Forever Family
Now that Stevie has regained his health and confidence, he’s ready for adoption. His rescuers hope for a family who understands that love is his only need — no other pets, just someone who can give him time, patience, and endless cuddles.
“He deserves someone who will spend time snuggled on the couch with him, take him for walks, let him soak up the sun, and give him the affection he missed all those years,” Boyd said.
Stevie’s bed may have started as a simple gift, but for him, it symbolizes everything — warmth, belonging, and the security of finally being loved.
