On what was supposed to be a calm morning walk in Muskoka, Ontario, Fiona Begg never imagined her day would turn into a life-saving mission. But when she saw a gray cat, badly injured on the roadside after being struck by a truck, instinct and compassion took over.

A Heartbreaking Sight

Fiona first noticed the cat quietly sitting near the road, but moments later she heard a cry that froze her in her tracks. The cat had been hit by a vehicle and was lying helplessly in the road as more traffic approached.

“It was one of the most heartbreaking sights I’ve ever seen,” Fiona said.

Without hesitation, she stopped traffic, rushed forward, and scooped the bleeding cat into her arms. She didn’t know if he would survive, but she refused to let him suffer alone.

Clinging to Life — and to Love

Though severely injured, the cat seemed to understand that he was finally safe.

“When I held him, he clung to my shoulder like he was holding on for dear life,” Fiona recalled. “If these were his last moments, I wanted him to feel love and know he mattered.”

By the time she reached the nearest vet clinic, the cat was still holding on tightly. In fact, the veterinary staff had to gently pry him from Fiona’s arms to begin treatment.

From Despair to Miracle

The prognosis was grim. The vets warned Fiona the cat might not make it through the night. Heartbroken, she left the clinic expecting she had just said goodbye.

But four days later, Fiona received an unexpected call: against all odds, the cat had survived.

“When I got the call, it felt like nothing short of a miracle,” she said.

A Second Chance at Life

Fiona returned to the clinic, this time not just as a rescuer but as a future pet parent. She adopted the brave cat and gave him the name Lucky Chance — a fitting tribute to the miracle of his survival.

Though Fiona always considered herself more of a “dog person,” her bond with Lucky Chance was instant and undeniable.

“Something in me knew he was meant to be mine,” Fiona said.

A New Family

Since coming home, Lucky Chance has thrived. He quickly bonded with Fiona’s dog, Link, and the trio became inseparable. Whether it’s hiking through the Canadian wilderness or curling up together at home, Lucky Chance is always part of the adventure.
