Orphaned Baby Kangaroo Rescued From Wet Field in Victoria

Earlier this month in Victoria, Australia, a routine workday turned into a life-saving mission when a powerline worker noticed something unusual in a nearby field. What looked like a small, fuzzy lump turned out to be a shivering, orphaned baby kangaroo — and thanks to quick action, the little joey now has a second chance at life.

A Lucky Spotting in the Field

Grant, a journeyman working on powerlines, spotted the tiny creature hunched in the grass. Concerned, he checked with the property owner, who explained that the baby had been sitting there alone all day.

Realizing the animal wouldn’t survive the night — especially with foxes in the area — Grant marked the location with twine and an arrow before calling Central Goldfields Wildlife Rescue for expert help.

“He was in the right place, at the right time!” said India Armstrong of the rescue group. “He was very concerned about the little joey, especially if he was left by himself overnight.”

A Scared Little Survivor

When rescuers arrived, the frightened joey, later named Weird Al, bolted through the wet grass. The team worked carefully, circling around so as not to scare him further. Finally, he stopped long enough for one rescuer to scoop him up.

“He was drenched from standing in the wet field all day — cold, scared, but safe now,” a team member wrote on Facebook.

Wrapped in a blanket, Weird Al began to calm down.

Recovery and a New Chapter

Back at the shelter, Weird Al drank kangaroo formula and slowly relaxed into care. He will remain at the rescue until he’s strong enough to transition into a pre-release area, where human interaction will be kept to a minimum.

The goal is clear: prepare him for life back in the wild.

“[He’s] warm, fed, and beginning his new chapter in care with joey friends by his side,” rescuers shared.

A Future Full of Hope

Though his start in life was filled with loss and danger, Weird Al’s future is now bright. With the support of his rescuers, the little joey won’t have to survive alone. Instead, he’ll grow up safely until the day comes when he can hop free once again in the wild.
