Woman Uses Plastic Container to Save Her Elderly Dog From Rising Floodwaters

When devastating floods swept through Chloe Adams’ hometown, she was forced to make a life-or-death decision in a matter of minutes — how to save herself and her beloved elderly dog, Sandy. The rising floodwaters threatened everything, and Chloe’s quick thinking became the key to their survival.

A Desperate Plan to Save Sandy

As the floodwaters quickly rose around her home, Chloe realized that she and Sandy would need to swim to safety — specifically, to a neighbor’s rooftop. While Chloe was a strong swimmer, Sandy, her senior dog, was unable to swim. Chloe’s immediate concern was the safety of her dog.

“I was more worried about losing her in the water than myself,” Chloe shared.

Chloe first attempted to use Sandy’s dog bed as a flotation device, but it quickly sank. In a panic, she grabbed a large plastic storage container, hoping it would work. However, the container, too, began to sink under Sandy’s weight. Time was running out, and Chloe needed a solution fast.

A Lifesaving Makeshift Raft

With only precious moments left before the water rose too high, Chloe’s resourcefulness kicked in. She grabbed a couch cushion and wedged it underneath the plastic container, turning it into a makeshift raft. Holding onto the container for stability, Chloe swam through the dangerous floodwaters, pulling Sandy to safety.

As Chloe navigated the rising floodwaters, she knew they were both in grave danger. But she wasn’t going to give up. With the makeshift raft, she managed to reach the rooftop, where the two huddled together, exhausted and cold.

Waiting for Rescue

Once on the roof, Chloe used the same plastic container to shield Sandy from the cold rain. They spent hours on the rooftop, shivering, waiting for rescue. For five long hours, Chloe and Sandy remained there, soaked and cold, but safe for the moment.

Finally, Chloe’s uncle arrived in a kayak, rescuing them from the floodwaters. They were safe but shaken, both emotionally and physically.

A Story of Devotion and Love

Now, Chloe and Sandy are recovering at Chloe’s grandmother’s house. Though the trauma of the ordeal still lingers, Chloe is incredibly grateful that they both survived.

“We comfort each other when going through something hard,” Chloe reflected. “I’m there to hold her and tell her it’s OK, and she lays her head in my lap knowing I’m in pain.”

Their bond has grown even stronger after the disaster, and Chloe’s devotion to Sandy is clear. The story of their survival serves as a reminder of the deep bond between humans and their pets — and the lengths we’ll go to protect the ones we love.

Chloe’s quick thinking, fueled by love and determination, turned an ordinary plastic container into a lifesaving raft. Their journey, one of courage and resilience, shows the strength of the human-animal bond in the face of danger.
