Hamid Abboudi, a consultant urologist at New Victoria Hospital, explained that your urination habits change throughout your life. While children and young adults tend to visit the loo more frequently, those over 60 may experience a rise in their need to pee as their bodies age.

For Children:
Young children tend to urinate more frequently, with toddlers typically going between 8 to 14 times a day. This decreases to around 6-12 times for older children. If your child is going more frequently than usual, it could be due to factors like anxiety, constipation, caffeine, or even a small bladder.

For Teenagers:
Teenagers, especially during puberty, may experience hormonal changes that lead to more frequent trips to the bathroom. Typically, teenagers urinate between 4 and 6 times a day. While frequent urination can be common during this stage, it could also signal underlying issues like infections, diabetes, or excessive caffeine consumption. However, in most cases, this will resolve on its own.

For Adults Under 60:
As you enter adulthood, the average number of bathroom trips typically ranges from 6 to 9 times per day. Women tend to urinate more often than men, with women averaging 5.6 times daily compared to men’s average of 4.8. If you’re under 60, it’s normal to occasionally get up at night to pee as well. However, pregnancy and urinary tract infections can lead to more frequent trips during this stage.

For Adults Over 60:
Once you reach your 60s, your body may require you to go to the bathroom up to 10 times a day. This can be due to age-related changes in kidney function, weaker bladder muscles, or medications like diuretics that increase urination. Nocturia, the condition of waking up multiple times throughout the night to urinate, is also common in older adults. Additionally, a growing prostate in men can put pressure on the bladder, contributing to more frequent bathroom visits.

Warning Signs to Watch For:
While these numbers provide a general guide, it’s important to be aware of your body’s signals. Abboudi recommends seeking medical advice if you notice any of the following:

  • Blood in your urine
  • Sudden changes in your usual bathroom habits
  • Waking up more than once a night to urinate
  • Smokers should be particularly cautious of any changes, as they are at a higher risk of bladder cancer.
