New drone footage has revealed critical evidence recovered from a campsite where Tom Phillips had been hiding with his three children for nearly four years. Phillips, who had disappeared with his kids in December 2021, was shot dead in a dramatic shootout with police in Marokopa, a small town on New Zealand’s west coast, on September 8.
Phillips’ children—Jayda, Maverick, and Ember—were just 8, 7, and 5 years old when they were taken. Authorities confirmed that after a gunfight with police, one officer was shot in the head and remains in critical condition, while Phillips was killed at the scene. The two surviving children were later found safe after an extensive search by authorities.
Key Evidence Discovered
Drone footage captured by the New Zealand Herald has shown items recovered from the campsite, about 7 kilometers from where Phillips was killed. Among the items found were a quad bike, a motorbike, and other significant objects like plastic containers, tarpaulins, oil containers, milk bottles, tyres, and a bike helmet. Although authorities clarified that not all of the debris was related to the investigation, these items could help identify who assisted Phillips during his years on the run.
New Zealand Police confirmed that these items are part of the investigation into Phillips’ actions and who may have been helping him hide out with his children. Acting District Commander Andrea McBeth said that the recovered items would be crucial in determining who else might have been involved in aiding Phillips.

The Children’s Mother Responds
The children’s mother, Cat, expressed relief after it was confirmed that her children were found safe. In a statement, she said, “First and foremost, we are deeply relieved that for our tamariki (children), this ordeal has come to an end. They have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years, and we are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care.”
However, Cat also expressed sorrow over how the events unfolded. “Our hope has always been that the children could be returned in a peaceful and safe way for everyone involved,” she added.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation continues as police search for clues about the events leading up to Phillips’ death. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether others were directly involved, but they are continuing to examine the items recovered from the campsites. With the evidence gathered, investigators aim to determine how Phillips was able to evade capture for so long.
The case has drawn attention due to the mysterious circumstances of Phillips’ disappearance with his children and the tragic end to a years-long search for answers.
