New Zealand police have released new photographs of a second campsite where Tom Phillips is believed to have hidden with his children after disappearing in 2021, providing a chilling new detail that could alter the course of the investigation.
A Father’s Long Escape
Tom Phillips, along with his three children—Jayda, Maverick, and Ember—vanished from their home in 2021, triggering a massive police search. The case remained one of New Zealand’s most perplexing missing person investigations, with the authorities pursuing leads and sightings across the country.
On September 8, Phillips was killed in a shootout with police in Marokopa, a small town in the Waikato region. The confrontation followed reports of a break-in at a farm supply shop, where Phillips was found with one of his children on a quad bike. Gunfire broke out during the police response, resulting in one officer being critically injured. Phillips was shot and killed at the scene, but not before a second officer intervened.
Discovery of the Second Campsite
Just days after Phillips’ death, police discovered a second campsite believed to have been used by him and his children. This campsite, located just 200 meters from the first one, contained a kitchen setup and a designated sleeping area. Authorities now believe this campsite provides key insight into Phillips’ time on the run and reveals a disturbing possibility.
The Theory of Outside Help
At a press conference on September 10, Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders discussed the significance of the second campsite and shared an alarming theory. He confirmed that investigators believe Phillips was receiving help from others while on the run. “We think it’s absolutely important that we continue to look for those people that have been supporting Tom Phillips and hold them accountable,” Saunders stated.
The discovery of items at the second campsite further supports the theory that Phillips had outside assistance. These items are being examined to determine whether they were obtained through burglaries or supplied by accomplices.

A Long and Secretive Search
Despite extensive efforts by police, Phillips and his children managed to stay hidden for almost four years. The campsite’s findings have raised further questions about how Phillips was able to evade capture for so long. The police suspect that Phillips may have had help from individuals who were not only providing him with resources but possibly shelter as well.
While it’s unclear whether the second campsite was their primary residence during the four-year escape, it remains a critical piece of evidence in piecing together the full story.
Ongoing Investigation
Detective Saunders emphasized that authorities will continue to gather evidence to identify anyone involved in helping Phillips. “We are currently looking at a number of items at the site… it is apparent that he had outside help,” Saunders said. As the investigation continues, police are hopeful that they will be able to bring those who assisted Phillips to justice.
The children, who were found safe after Phillips’ death, are now in the care of authorities, with ongoing support as they recover from the trauma of their ordeal.
This case has not only captivated the public but also brought to light the lengths to which some individuals will go to avoid capture and the disturbing reality of how a fugitive can survive with outside assistance. Authorities remain committed to solving the case fully and holding all parties involved accountable.
