Seeking a symbolic farewell to her wedding gown, Maria arranged a “trash the dress” photo shoot, a trend where brides wear their gowns in unconventional, often rugged environments like muddy fields or bodies of water. The idea is to dramatically mark the transition from bride to wife.

On the fateful day of the shoot, Maria waded into the Ouareau River, a fast-moving body of water located about 46 miles northeast of Montreal. As she stood in the water, the gown became heavy with water, pulling her into the current. Though she knew how to swim, the weight of the soaked dress overpowered her.
Photographer Louis Pagakis, who was capturing the moment, tried desperately to save her but was unable to. Maria’s last words were, “I can’t anymore,” before she was pulled beneath the surface by the heavy gown, which was described by responders as being “like an anvil.” Despite efforts by police officers who jumped into the river to rescue her, Maria’s body was not recovered until later that evening.
