Man Who’s Held His Arm Up For 50 Years Explains Why He’s Been Doing It

Amar Bharati, now in his seventies, has spent the last 50 years with his arm raised above his head in a religious and spiritual act that has captivated people worldwide. This extraordinary gesture began in 1973, when Bharati, then leading a normal life as a bank worker, decided to abandon his family and embrace a more spiritual path.

At the time, Bharati was married and had three children, but he felt a deep calling to pursue a higher purpose. This led him to become a Sadhu, an ascetic who practices self-denial and renunciation of worldly pleasures. He devoted his life to Shiva, one of the three main gods in Hinduism, who is believed to possess the powers of destruction and recreation.

Bharati’s decision to raise his arm in honor of Shiva was not just an act of religious devotion, but also a symbol of his commitment to peace. He explained that he wanted to “militate against wars and support world peace,” as he observed the deep divisions and conflicts in the world. He questioned the reasons for fighting and hatred, and instead, advocated for unity and peace. “I just want all Indians and the whole world to live in peace with each other,” he stated.

For most people, holding their arm up for even a short period would be physically uncomfortable. But Bharati’s determination led him to endure the pain, and it took around two years for the pain in his arm to subside. However, the consequences of keeping his arm raised for decades have been severe. Due to the lack of blood flow and muscle deterioration, his arm has become completely immobile, shriveled, and is now half the size of his healthy arm. His fingers are permanently curled, and his fingernails have grown so long they spiral down his wrist.

His commitment to holding his arm up as a symbol of devotion to Shiva and peace remains unbroken, despite the physical toll it has taken on his body.
