A helicopter crash in New York on April 8, 2025, claimed the lives of six people, including a tech executive, his wife, and their three young children. The family had just arrived in the city, hoping to enjoy a memorable vacation, but what was supposed to be an exciting sightseeing tour turned into an unimaginable nightmare.
The Family Behind the Tragedy
The victims have been identified as Agustin Escobar, an executive at Siemens, his wife Mercè Camprubi Montal, and their three children, ages 4, 5, and 11. The family was on a helicopter tour with New York Helicopters, a local tour company offering sightseeing flights over Manhattan and the Hudson River. The flight, which took off from Lower Manhattan at 3 p.m., should have been a routine tour. Tragically, just 15 minutes into the flight, the helicopter spiraled out of control and crashed into the Hudson River.
Escobar, who was an executive for Siemens in Spain and Southwest Europe, was highly regarded in his field. His leadership was instrumental in Siemens’ success, particularly in the mobility and transport sector. Colleagues and friends have described him as calm under pressure, always putting his family first. Juan Ignacio Diaz, a former colleague of Escobar, reflected on his character, saying, “No matter how hard things got, he always stayed calm and kept it together. He had this way of making things feel OK, even when they weren’t.”
A Horrifying Scene Unfolds
The crash occurred near Pier 40, in full view of onlookers. Witnesses described the chilling sight of the helicopter breaking apart mid-air, with one person recalling hearing a “sonic boom” as the helicopter’s propeller separated from the aircraft. Social media videos from the scene show the chopper spiraling downward before it crashed into the water, upside down.
Witnesses were in shock as they saw the horrific accident unfold. One observer, Sarah Jane Raymond Ryer, told CBS that she saw the propeller flying alone in the air, detached from the helicopter. Another witness, Max, described the terrifying moment, “I saw the propeller spinning, and then it landed in the water. It was like a big bang on my right.”

Rescue Efforts and Heartbreaking News
NYPD and FDNY divers rushed to the scene to recover the victims, but tragically, only six people, including the family members, were confirmed dead. Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were taken to local hospitals but did not survive their injuries.
The Escobars were visiting New York from Barcelona, marking the beginning of their vacation in what would soon turn into an unfathomable tragedy. The family had been photographed before the flight, smiling and giving thumbs-up for what was supposed to be a fun outing. Unfortunately, just minutes later, their lives were tragically cut short.
The Investigation and Possible Causes
While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, experts are examining several possible factors, including mechanical failure and fuel issues. Michael Roth, the owner of New York Helicopters, confirmed that the pilot had called in to report he was running low on fuel. Roth stated, “The pilot called in that he was landing and needed fuel, but he was not heard from for 20 minutes.”
The helicopter, which had been in operation for about 15 minutes, was reportedly running low on fuel shortly after takeoff. However, the cause of the helicopter’s failure remains uncertain, and authorities continue to investigate.
Roth, a father and grandfather, expressed his deep sorrow, saying, “We are devastated. My wife hasn’t stopped crying since the afternoon. I don’t know how this happened. We have no clue what went wrong.”

A Jersey City resident, Dani Horbiak, shared her experience: “I heard five or six loud noises that sounded almost like gunshots. Then I saw pieces fall off, and I watched it fall into the river.”
Another witness, Ipsitaa Banigrhi, recalled hearing a loud, thunder-like sound, followed by the sight of black particles flying through the air. The realization of the tragedy hit her when emergency vehicles arrived.
